The Lawyer’s Top 100 European Law Firms 2021 ranking

For many firms in Europe, the difficulties of 2020 turned out to be how to meet capacity when workflows roared back in the second half, and how to keep their staff motivated through waves of lockdowns and restrictions.

There is some correlation between the intensity of a jurisdiction’s lockdown and the impact on financial performance. Financial results viewed on a regional perspective vary from extremely strong (Portugal, Switzerland and most of Germany), solid (Austria and the Nordic countries), flat (Benelux, Italy and Spain), to challenging (France and Ireland).

Few European 100 firms provide profit figures, but anecdotally profitability was up across the Continent. The reduction in costs generated by moving everything online is significant, and this has fed back into bottom lines.
