Looking likely

Name: Mhairi Fraser

Seat: Epsom & Ewell

Legal clout: White-collar crime associate at White & Case

Chances: Taking over the Conservative cause in Epsom from the outgoing Chris Grayling, Fraser is making a few waves as someone who has said she has “never been as excited about a political candidate as I am about Trump” and “I don’t see Russia as a natural enemy.” This is an incredibly safe seat and it looks like White & Case will be short one associate very soon.

Name: Neil Shastri-Hurst

Seat: Solihull West & Shirley

Legal clout: A medically qualified barrister at No5 Chambers

Chances: A newly-created Midlands seat. It might be close but Shastri-Hurst should take it.

Name: Sarah Bool

Seat: South Northamptonshire

Legal clout: A senior associate in the property team at Forsters, who trained at Clifford Chance.

Chances: The outgoing MP is Andrea Leadsom who commanded a majority of over 27,000. If Bool loses here it will have been a very bad night for the Conservatives.

A fight on their hands

Name: Oliver Carroll

Seat: Altringham and Sale West

Legal clout: Senior litigation associate at Clifford Chance

Chances: Chair of the 1922 committee Sir Graham Brady is stepping down here. He’s held the seat since 1997 but given the woes of the Conservative Party at the moment Carroll may struggle to hold on to it.

Name: Sir Ashley Fox

Seat: Bridgwater

Legal clout: Solicitor who worked as an insurance litigator in Bristol from 1994 to 2009, later becoming a member of the European Parliament.

Chances: The old Bridgwater and West Somerset had an enormous Tory majority. Things will be closer this time around.

Name: Samuel Joynson

Seat: Eastleigh

Legal clout: A Freshfields trainee and solicitor from 2015 to 2018, now out of law with Boston Consulting Group.

Chances: The Liberal Democrats will be strong challengers here in the event of a collapse in the Conservative vote share.

Name: Joe Robertson

Seat: Isle of Wight East

Legal clout: Family solicitor who trained at Lee & Thompson

Chances: The Isle of Wight has been split into two constituencies for the first time. Labour has never won here ever, but could be in with a shot. A seat to watch.

Name: Lucy Demery

Seat: Wokingham

Legal clout: A corporate lawyer at Cravath in New York from 2011-13, who has long since turned to investment banking.

Chances: Tory grandee John Redwood is the outgoing MP. The Liberal Democrats are expected to put up a strong fight in this Thames Valley constituency.

Praying the polls narrow

Name: Sidney Yankson

Seat: Southampton Itchen

Legal clout: Barrister; it’s hard to tell where but it looks he practised in Hong Kong.

Chances: The Tories currently hold this but would have to have a far better night than is currently anticipated for Yankson to retain it.

Name: Alex Deane

Seat: Finchley & Golders Green

Legal clout: Door tenant at Farringdon Chambers, former chief of staff to David Cameron and currently head of public affairs at FTI Consulting.

Chances: There’s another barrister-on-barrister battle going on in Finchley, with Sarah Sackman up for Labour. She’s favourite to win by far.

Name: Gavin Haran

Seat: Southend East & Rochford

Legal clout: Not a lawyer but head of asset management policy at Macfarlanes

Chances: A 12,000 Conservative majority looks at risk here unless the polls narrow.

Name: Charlotte Salomon

Seat: Norwich North

Legal clout: “Studies law by night. Twin mum by day (and night).” She’s at the University of Essex.

Chances: Labour in the Blair years before turning Tory in a 2009 by-election, this one looks likely to turn red again.

Don’t quit the day job

Name: Jonathan Hulley

Seat: Twickenham

Legal clout: Partner and head of social housing at Birketts

Chances: Vince Cable’s old seat and safe for the Lib Dems these days. Birketts won’t need to find a new social housing head.

Name: Andrew Dinsmore

Seat: Hammersmith & Chiswick

Legal clout: Barrister at Twenty Essex, focusing mainly on cybersecurity fraud, banking, shipbuilding, shipping, energy, insurance and sport.

Chances: Hammersmith is the stronghold of another barrister, Labour’s Andy Slaughter, who will retain this seat with ease.

Name: Joel Williams

Seat: Cardiff North

Legal clout:  Describes himself as a qualified barrister, although he only finished his LLM in 2022 and doesn’t appear to have been a pupil.

Chances: Cardiff North is Labour territory; Williams won’t be tearing up trees here.

Name: Laura-Beth Thompson

Seat: Heywood and Middleton North

Legal clout: Left law after qualifying with Woodcocks Haworth & Nuttall of Bury in 2019.

Chances: A classic ‘red wall’ seat that fell to the Conservatives (just) in the last election, Thompson’s chances of hanging on to it are negligible.

Name: Zarmeena Abdul Quraishi

Seat: Nottingham South

Legal clout: Solicitor at Freeths from 2015 to 2019, now an ops director in the care sector.

Chances: A very safe Labour seat. No chance of an upset here.

Name: Mehreen Malik

Seat: Holborn & St Pancras

Legal clout: Mayer Brown’s head of pro bono, formerly of Clifford Chance and Orrick. Also a qualified barrister.

Chances: Malik is fighting one of the most unwinnable seats in the country: Sir Keir Starmer’s constituency.

Name:  Karen Cooksley

Seat: Leeds South

Legal clout: Senior planning lawyer formerly of Blake Morgan, Bevan Brittan and Winckworth Sherwood, among others; now a consultant.

Chances: Cooksley has no chance of troubling Labour’s Hilary Benn in this re-established seat.

Name: Amanda Jenner

Seat: Merthyr Tydfil & Aberdare

Legal clout: A litigator who trained at Eversheds and is now with high-street firm Harrison’s Solicitors.

Chances: The Welsh Valleys are a Labour heartland: there will be no shock here.

Name: Attic Rahman

Seat: Tottenham

Legal clout: Self-employed Rahman says: “For a living, it is a privilege to work as a solicitor. I practice in property development and finance with over 15 years’ experience. My practice is predominantly concentrated on the acquisition of land for residential and commercial development.” He doesn’t appear to be on the Roll, though.

Chances: Barrister David Lammy holds Tottenham for Labour with a massive majority.

Name: Suzanne Pearson

Seat: Barnsley South

Legal clout: An experienced solicitor with trained at A&O, was a partner CMS and DLA Piper, then went in-house as a GC, and is now a consultant at Flex Legal.

Chances: Barnsley is safe Labour ground. Pearson will likely see the Tories’ vote share drop further.

Name: Haroun Malik

Seat: Glasgow South

Legal clout: Criminal defence lawyer and partner at MCO Defence Solicitors

Chances: This will be a scrap between the SNP and Labour, with the Tories way back in third or fourth.

Name: Aaron Jacob

Seat: Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough

Legal clout: He appears to be recently-qualified at family firm Fahri Jacob in Crouch End.

Chances: David Blunkett’s old seat is still safely Labour.

Name: Mike Prendergast

Seat: West Lancashire

Legal clout: Private client partner at Ormskirk firm Dickinson Parker Hill.

Chances:  Another safe Labour seat.
