September’s Signal Disputes report is the annual Global Litigation 50: ranking the world’s top 50 law firms based on the revenue generated globally by their core litigation and arbitration practices in the most recent financial year, as well as income from contentious work generated outside those practices. The report analyses firms’ financial performance, productivity and headcount growth, along with global trends in litigation.
After what last year’s Global Litigation 50 described as “one of the strangest periods” for the market in the past 20 years, in many respects global disputes work began to return to familiar ground last year. Although growth at the Global Litigation 50 firms slowed in 2022/23, several were quick to point out that they were still very busy, and that the market was simply levelling out after high growth in 2021/22. The combined revenue across the Global Litigation 50 rose only 2.6 per cent last year, compared to 10 per cent the year before, reaching $38.96bn after 2021/22’s $37.95bn.
Whereas last year 17 firms increased their litigation revenue by more than 10 per cent, this year only 10 did so. No firms entered or dropped out of this year’s Global Litigation 50 list, indicating that slow growth was the case across the board. Partner and lawyer headcounts also increased slowly, the former by 1.9 per cent and the latter by 3 per cent.
