England’s two great university cities, Oxford and Cambridge, have traditionally been of limited significance as legal centres.
Reading has long been the chief business hub of the Thames Valley, taking the largest corporate matters and leaving the firms in nearby Oxford to private client, agriculture, and work for the university and its many colleges. While Cambridge is the main city in its region, over the years it has been mostly ignored by large national firms.
But change has come. The completion of the Elizabeth Line and Covid 19-related changes to work patterns mean Reading’s attractiveness, with London only 23 minutes away by train, is in question. New firms are arriving in both Oxford and Cambridge, enticed by the opportunities presented by their status as booming science cities.
This month’s UK legal report explores Oxford and Cambridge’s growing prominence as legal centres and includes firm profiles encompassing partner details, recent matters, strategy, alongside other key data points.
