Michael Coates is General Counsel Corporate and Chief Ethics & Compliance Officer for Shell plc. In this role, Michael leads a global team of over 240 lawyers and other professionals supporting Shell’s group-level activities. He joined Shell in 2004 from the London office of Slaughter and May, where he worked as a mergers & acquisitions and corporate finance lawyer. During his career at Shell, Michael has served as UK Head of Legal, Associate General Counsel of the Downstream and Upstream businesses, Executive Committee Secretary and Assistant to the Chief Executive Officer. Michael is a Fellow of the UK Institute of Directors, Senior Vice Chair of the Corporate and M&A Committee of the International Bar Association and a member of the Development Board of the Bingham Centre for the Rule of Law.
